Wire Rope Maintenance: Reduce Costs, Increase SafetyA wire rope will FAIL if improperly maintained in the field. Periodic application of a high quality preservative lubricant will increase the service life of wire rope resulting in cost savings, reduced downtime, and significantly reduces the possibility of breakage resulting in injury or death. How does a preservative-lubricant lengthen the life of a wire rope? Lubrication: A wire rope is a machine by dictionary definition: "An assemblage of parts ... that transmit forces, motion, and energy one to another in some predetermined manner & desired end," Wire Rope Technical Board (WRTB). As with any machine, proper lubrication of wire rope is essential to reduce wear and extend operating life. A wire rope has dozens - even hundreds - of individual wires, which are formed and fabricated to operate at close bearing tolerance one to another. A high quality lubricant will reduce the wear caused by the metal-to-metal contact occurring when the wires slide and adjust to accommodate the differences in length as the wire rope bends around a drum or sheave. The sharper the bend the greater the wear and the greater the need for lubrication. Preservative: The majority of wire rope is manufactured with high carbon steel which has a tendency to corrode when subjected to outside conditions such as moisture, acid rain, road salt, salt air, etc. When wire rope is exposed to outdoor conditions for extended periods of time the wire rope will trap moisture within its strands. This will result in corrosion throughout the wire rope! Rigging inspectors following criteria established by OSHA and ANSI will note corrosion on the exterior wires of a wire rope but have difficulty evaluating inner-strand corrosion and its severity. Preservatives, blended into a lubricant or base oil, are formulated to repel attack from the three major causes of corrosion: moisture, salt, and acid (acid rain). The preservative in your wire rope lubricant should be able to perform the following three functions: displace moisture, neutralize acids / contaminants, and protect the metal from pitting by forming a barrier film.
