DEPTH CONTROL

Depth is one of the most fundamental parameters determined when logging well bores. By virtue of the ability of depth to be accurately measured and resolved, wireline logging techniques are able to offer the uniqueness of depth related information.

As in any measurement system, the depth control system relies upon calibration and verification. The calibration is based upon known and measurable properties relating to cable stretch characteristics, and the verification procedure assures accurate compensation for variations in the effective length of the cable as a function of variations in the tension.

Using present technologies, several assumptions are made which are important in defining the accuracy of the system. These assumptions define limitations which will be discussed later.
